Pet Surgery FAQs

Pet surgery typically occurs in four phases. We do our best to inform you what to expect during the consultation, pre-op, operation, and post-op phases

The consultation phase starts with the decision that your pet needs surgery and continues until the day the surgery occurs. We aim to ensure you know of any preparations necessary before, during, and after surgery. You may receive instructions regarding:

• Expected dietary and medication changes
• Bathing and grooming pre- and post-surgery
• Pre-surgery tests
• Adapting your home and routines for post-surgery

We will provide specific instructions for you and your pet on the day of surgery. Generally, your pet will have dietary restrictions, such as no food or water for 12 hours before the operation. We will also ensure you know your arrival time and the check-in process.

Surgeries can be a stressful time for pet owners and their families. We provide clear expectations regarding:

• The expected time needed for surgery and recovery
• Your options while waiting during surgery and recovery
• Our surgical, anesthesia, and pain management practices
• The potential need for an overnight stay

After surgery, pets often wear bandages, cones, or other restrictive devices. We help you plan for issues such as:
